Running for me started in middle school where I quickly caught on and captured the 2 mile record, but I was still unsure about the whole concept. I continued to play soccer and wrestle throughout my high school career as well as run cross country and track. I was all-state in Michigan Cross-country twice, Wrestling, and Track for the two mile. Finally accepting that running was my calling and beginning to fall in love due to amazing high school coaches, I accepted an offer to run at Miami University (OH). Running against monster kickers in high school, I went in expecting to be a 10K runner and so did my coach. After a mediocre opening 10K on the track, I convinced my coach to let me race the mile next weekend. I ended up winning my heat in a 4:16, a 7 second PR from high school. From there I was hooked on the speed aspect of running. It culminated in MAC honors in cross country and track, and finally a 2017 MAC championship my senior year. After graduation, I entered medical school where I felt I needed to take sometime off of competitive running in order to focus on school. The itch never went away and in a year it became overwhelming to the point I thought I would try marathoning. I ran my first half in 2018 and first full at Chicago in 2019. While I miss races ending in 4 minutes, the team aspect of JSR has maintained my motivation and I truly believe that Jenny and the rest of the group will help me form and break new goals and limits.

I like to say that I come from a running family, and have been running since I've been in 1st grade. I played club soccer through my youth, but still joined the cross country teams in grade school, junior high, and then eventually full time in high school. I went on to graduate from the University of Illinois, but did not run collegiately. After a brief haiutus post college, and another 5 years of casual running, I met the Jenny Spangler Racing Team and began chasing new PRs. This group is comprised of dedicated, hard working, and humble people, and I'm honored to be part of it.

I started running as a hurdler in high school competing during the school year and USATF summer meets. In college I ran casually for fitness and stress relief. A year after graduating college I decided to train for my first half marathon with high school friends in 2008. I had never raced further than 400m, so I picked an estimated finish time of 3:30 for my first half marathon. My training went very well and I soon discovered my love for distance running finishing in 1:47. Shortly after my first half marathon I started graduate school and tried to fit in running whenever possible between classes and clinical rotations. I ran a spring half marathon in both 2009 and 2010 and a few smaller races during the summer months. After graduating from physician assistant school in June 2010 I began participating in Jenny’s track workout and gradually worked at increasing my mileage and speed. I feel I have significantly grown as a runner and person thanks to the atmosphere provided by JSR. I am very thankful for my teammates and their support as I continue to transition from a sprinter to a distance runner.

I ran my first road race when I was 8 years old, during the running boom of the 1970s. My dad had caught the running bug, and I would tag along on his runs in my Nike Wally Waffles. In high school, I was a good but not great cross country and track runner. I went to college at a large university and decided not to even try to make their very competitive cross country team. Twelve years and about 30 pounds later, I found myself thirty-years old, out of breath, and not looking anything like a runner. I missed the feeling of being able to sprint 100 yards and not being winded. So I started running again, mostly for weight loss, but found it hard to stay motivated on my own. After having my weight and fitness yo-yo around for a few years, I met Dave and Shelley at a local running club. We then met Jenny and learned about her running programs. I signed up, caught the running bug for the second time in my life, and started competing in road races again. (I even got my dad back into it after 25 years off from running.) Since then, with a lot of hard work, my times have steadily improved. More importantly, I've become smarter about training and feel more likely to reach my potential, while having fun along the way. I'm also humbled to be a part of a close-knit group of some pretty extraordinary people -- people who are a strong source of support, direction, motivation, knowledge, and friendship.

I ran track and cross country in grade school and high school and went on to compete for two years while at the University of Notre Dame. In my first year not competing at the collegiate level, I decided to challenge myself and run the marathon. I ran my first marathon in 1999 with the goal of just finishing. I ran 3:48:15 and was hooked. After taking some time off of running competitively to focus on my career, my passion for competing was reignited as I met Jenny and her JSR team in 2005. With Jenny's guidance I progressed gradually and have PRed at all distances. My largest improvement and main focus in recent years has been the marathon distance. In December 2011, I ran a 2:45:16 and qualified for the 2012 US Olympic Marathon Trials. Qualifying for the Olympic Trials was a lifelong dream realized only through the ever-present support of Jenny and my JSR teammates.

I picked up running when I was about 27 years old and I quickly fell in love with the marathon. I ran my first marathon in October of 2007, with a time of 4:30:14, and immediately started thinking about the next one. One year later, I ran #2 in 3:57:13. My third was 3:40:55; fourth was 3:24:55; and my fifth was 3:08:39 – a BQ!! I ran my first sub 3-hour marathon in 2012 and I started training with JSR in 2013. By fall of 2014 I ran my first sub 2:50 and have since worked my way down to 2:39:31. Having such a large training group of great runners (and great people!) has made me the runner I am today. I can’t thank Jenny enough for having me be part of this. Next for me is to work hard, try different things, and push myself to see how much faster I can get.

My love of running started at an early age. In the 4th grade, I was selected by my homeroom to represent the class for the 400m dash for our field days competition. I ran my first 5K in 5th grade and started running cross country at the varsity level in 6th grade. I ran competitively through my freshman year of college until a serious running injury ended my collegiate career. I stopped running for over 12 years and picked it up again when my two sons were young, more for sanity's sake. As I got involved with the Chicago running community, I had the opportunity to work with some great coaches and run with several racing teams. I started training with Mesh Rich, and several of her JSR teammates who were always more than welcoming. After plateauing with my running, I reached out to Jenny Spangler - someone who I have long admired as an athlete, coach, and person. I have seen what Jenny has been able do with so many runners, especially those that are Masters runners that juggle work and family responsibilities along with the demands of marathon training. I know that if anyone can help me achieve a few remaining racing goals, Jenny can.

After many years of soccer, I made the permanent transition to cross country and track my sophomore year in high school. I was very fortunate to have an outstanding cross country coach, Jeff Leavey, who challenged me to achieve my potential. I ran casually through my twenties and in my early thirties found myself frustrated that all my PRs were over a decade old. As I started to train harder, I never expected to find the same camaraderie and coaching that I enjoyed as a teenager and was therefore thrilled to connect with Jenny Spangler and her crew in 2010. Through Jenny’s guidance and the incredible support of the JSR team, I’ve regained my form and am starting to set new PRs again. Compared to most, I’m still learning the longer distance races and I look forward to challenging myself to reach my potential. By following Jenny’s training plans and running alongside the remarkable individuals in Jenny’s program I’m confident I still have room for improvement as I enter my forties this year.

Before I joined JSR I didn't even know what a tempo run was. My fitness has improved dramatically in the last 3 years - beyond what I thought I was capable of. But based on where I am now, I feel like I am capable of a whole lot more. Jenny's program has provided the basis for that improvement - what you put into it, you get out. And I've made some great friends who continue to motivate me on a daily basis. Without them, I couldn't push myself as hard as I do or as consistently. Hopefully, I have the same effect on them!

As an energetic young fella growing up in sunny Australia, I enjoyed the outdoor life and developed a love for a wide array of sports. While I played cricket, rugby, swimming, and enjoyed surfing, it was running that was always my passion. It was an interest I shared with my younger brother and together we trained (800m/1500m track) through our summers following the training methods of Aussie middle distance running greats like Herb Elliott. After finishing school, I discovered triathlons and spent the next 10 years racing competitively over the Olympic Triathlon Distance and was selected for the Australian University team for the World Triathlon Championships in Hungary, 2000. I then returned to my running roots and spent several years racing over the 10K through Half Marathon distances with the Steakhouse Runners in Sydney. Having suffered some ongoing calf injuries, I spent some years out of action before moving to Lake Forest, IL, where I first met the friendly members of the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Running Club (through my kids’ school), and then members of the Jenny Spangler Racing Team (Jim Burgess, et. al.). I have enjoyed running consistently with them over a 2 year period and learning the craft and art of marathon running from the talented JSR team and coach Jenny Spangler. I am incredibly lucky to have found such a talented group, as they have made me feel incredibly welcome, helped me to improve my marathon times (my first was Chicago 3:07 and later went on to run California International Marathon in 2:54), and has given me a chance to teach them a thing or two about Aussies! I look forward to getting older, fitter, and faster with the JSR team!

I began running cross-country in junior high and ran through high school. While I ran at state my last three years, I did so thanks to my teammates; I was usually the 6th man on our strong, close-knit team. I did not run competitively in college and for most of the next 15 years, I ran off and on. I would sign up for a race or two, run enough to feel decently prepared, and then prioritize other interests again. An unfortunate encounter with ice kept me in and out of a walking boot for much of 2015, and once I was finally able to resume running again, I appreciated it that much more. My enthusiasm reached new levels after moving to the suburbs in 2016 when I met, began to run with, learn from, and enjoy the company of the JSR team. After a year of more consistent training with the team and a season of Jenny’s track workouts, I set PRs at every distance from the mile to half marathon. Being part of a team again is terrific, and I am more excited about running that I have been since high school. I look forward to putting in hard work with my teammates as we chase our goals together.

I come from a non-athletic background, and I picked up jogging in May of 2013 for about a two and a half months duration. I did my first ever road race, a 5K in July of 2013, in a time of 24:48. I took a brief hiatus yet again from everything until late summer of 2014. I signed up for a half marathon race in the early fall of 2014. In the very first week of training I sustained an IT injury and stopped running. With just 10-15 miles in total for training, I accepted the mental and physical challenge and surprisingly jogged my first half marathon in 2:24:44. I progressed to my first Chicago Marathon in October of 2015 and finished in 3:41:33. In 2016, I ran the Chicago Marathon again and finished in 3:35:13. In January of 2017 I broke the 1:30:00 barrier in the half marathon by 43 seconds. This was a turning point in my short running career. I further improved to a 3:11:47 marathon in April of 2017. I joined Jenny Spangler’s track program in May of 2017. It was my first time ever on the track, stepping onto the red turf where Jenny taught me the basics of running track. I also joined Jenny Spangler’s long runs on Sunday mornings and I began to run with the Jenny Spangler Racing Team with only one ambition - to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The team helped me to BQ and run a 2:58:37 marathon at Sacramento in December of 2017. I continued to run with Jenny Spangler’s group for all of 2018, and through the constant support and motivation provided by the team, I ran some of my best times in 2018. The team is extremely dedicated and works very hard to continue the passion of running with full-time jobs and families. The team provides me immense inspiration and the drive to keep improving. I am very grateful to everyone in the Jenny Spangler running family for making me the runner I am today.

After taking a long break from running, I decided to get back into the sport by running the 2005 Chicago Marathon and training with the CARA training program, where I was lucky to have Meshelle Osborne and Kate DeProsperis as group leaders. Meshelle later became my wife; Kate became my training partner. With Kate, I started doing Jenny’s workouts and improved all of my times. Meshelle and I then started running with Jenny’s training group, and it has helped both of us to new PRs at every distance. Training with Jenny has been wonderful, not only because it has made us faster but also because it has broadened our running family. It is inspiring just to run with so many fast, dedicated runners. But they also are such supportive, kind people that the workouts and races get easier. Although I would have never expected it, I am getting faster in my forties than I’ve ever been before!

I've always been an athlete, but didn't start running seriously until after college. I ran my first marathon in 1997 and became addicted to the sport, falling in love with the challenge and feeling of accomplishment. When I moved to Chicago in 1999, I joined CARA and eventually became a group leader for its marathon training program. Through CARA, I was lucky enough to meet my (then future) husband Josh Rich as well as my good friend and training partner Kate DeProsperis. I like that running always has a way of bringing people together! After having two kids, I decided I needed a coach to hold me accountable and get me back into race shape. Since Josh and Kate had great success training under Jenny Spangler, I decided to reach out to her for help. My first year with Jenny, I set PRs in 6 distances, including my first sub-three hour marathon! JSR motivates me to set idealistic goals, work hard and run smart. I'm constantly impressed by the support and talent of the team. I feel honored to be a part of this amazing group of runners.

My running career started at the age of 13 thanks to the Hershey Track and Field Program. This sparked my interest in a sport that was typically only done with a soccer ball in front of my feet or through the yards and neighborhoods as a kid so in in Fall of 1995 I went out for the Junior High Cross Country Team. I ran for two years at Cole Jr. High and then with East Greenwich High School not having a mens cross country or track team I went out for soccer. My family moved to St. Louis Missouri in the fall of 1998 and deciding that my soccer playing days were well behind me, I went out for Cross Country in the Fall and then Track in the Spring. I ran for 3 years at Lafayette High School and could not have been happier running for a great coach on a solid team with my best friends. The next phase of my life took me to Truman State University - "Home of the Bulldogs". I competed at every distance from the 800 to the 10K at Truman and finally in my senior year of Track, I earned all-conference honors in the 10,000. Since College, I continued running and completed my first Chicago Marathon in 2006 and again fell more in love with running than ever before. But with a busy work schedule during off-shift hours and without a structured training plan or coach to lead me toward my goals, my running severely suffered. I met Jenny, Miki, and the rest of the JSR Team in the summer of 2009 and began to love running more than I ever had before. JSR provides me with structure, and a support system of enthusiastic and passionate teammates. Being a part of this team has transformed my approach to running and ignighted my desire to excel and reach my full potential. Without the support of my wife Kate, family, the JSR team, and Jenny and Miki, I wouldn’t love lacing up the running shoes everyday to head out on a run.

I ran competitive cross country and track throughout high school and college. After taking several years off, I returned to my passion for distance running and racing in 2010 by racing distances from 5K to half marathons. I joined the Jenny Spangler Racing team in 2012. This extremely supportive, encouraging, and talented group has helped me achieve new levels of training leading to several personal best times. In 2012, I competed in my first marathon (Chicago Marathon), and have since become addicted to the race. I achieved a huge marathon PR in 2015 with the help from JSR teammates, and look forward to building on that in the near future. I am very proud to race and compete for JSR!

I ran high school track and cross country and loved competing and succeeding with a team. I was asked to be varsity captain my senior year. We were a two-time state qualifying team and conference champions. After a number of years off I realized that the "desire" to compete was still inside me. I put out my last cigarette and I returned to running in November of 2000 with a promise to myself to finish the Chicago Marathon in 2001. Through what may have been the most difficult year of training in my life, I met my goal in a time of 3:53:59 and was immediately hooked on marathoning. Early on in my rebirth into running, I was content just finishing marathons with modest improvements. In 2005 I began training with fellow JSR runners Steve and Roger and realized that I wanted more than just to finish marathons, but to compete, be fast, and race them. I joined Jenny's track program that summer which turned me into a different runner. I've dedicated myself to taking my running to it's limits and seeing how fast I can be. As of 2008 I've run 19 marathons with a personal best of 2:50:18. I thrive in a team environment and am grateful to Jenny, Miki, and my teammates for all they've done for me, my running, and my life as a whole.
